BREED COMPARISON:
Volpino Itaiano vs American Eskimo
According to the AKC, the Eski is almost certiainly descended from the European Spitz, including:

White German Spitz
White Keeshound
White Pomeranian
Volpino Italiano (Italian Spitz)

(After World War II, West Coast breeders may have incorporated the Japanese Spitz into the Eski)

-The AKC recognizes three sizes of the American Eskimo.
· Height: 9-12 inches (toy), 12-15 inches (miniature), 15-19 inches (Standard)
· Weight: 6-10 pounds (toy), 10-20 pounds (miniature), 25-35 pounds (Standard)

The Volpino is the same in size as the Toy American Eskimo. Depending on the breeder, it can have different features. Since we originally wrote our research, we found , American breeders went to Italy, bought Volpino’s and brought them back to America, and changed the name to Toy American Eskimo's, claiming they were runts.

When a Standard American Eskimo shows in an AKC event or a UKC Event, the Standard Eski seems to always win over the Toy or Mini because they are the true American Eskimo's. Although we found when we showed our Volpino's, they would always win over the Toy, Mini Eski’s. This tells us that the judges know the Toy's and Mini Eski's are not true American Eskimo's. Other than the color white, they don't resemble the Standard.

The FCI does not recognize the American Eskimo Dog because it was developed from the German Spitz breeds and the smaller Toy and Mini from the Volpino Italiano, which are both recognized by FCI in the European Spitz section, Spitz and Primitive Types group.
American Eskimo's were recognized by the AKC in 1995, in the Non-Sporting Group.
